How i was Affected

Out of the presentations that my class mates made I found that the one presentation that affected me most was about Medical Marijuana. This one affected me the most because I thought that marijuana was a illegal drug that many people in the united states used. But my class mate instead used really interesting facts about how medical marijuana helps more people in hospitals then other drugs and really convinced me that its not that bad of a drug in the medical field. He really expressed that marijuana was a drug that cured many people when i thought it killed people! Over all I was shocked and he also had a lot of evidence to support his argument and make me know how real and how true his facts were.

Poverty in America

The article on Poverty called "Understanding Poverty in America" really changes the way I think about how big an issue it is in our society today. This article starts by telling its readers about how many numbers where under the line of poverty."Nearly 35 million poor persons living in this country." This definitely changes my thinking because more then 35 million people are homeless, hungry and or have health problems, this is not a very small amount of people. Also my mind was changed when this article explained a little more to the readers about what exactly it means to be in poverty. I found out that what most Americans think about what poverty and what the government thinks poverty is are Two different things. The government thinks that poverty is "not having what average working class has." So like not having a colored TV, stove micro wave and a certain amount of money. Most Americans think being in poverty is:"An inability to provide a family with nutritious food, clothing, and reasonable shelter." This changed my thinking because i realized how the government judges poverty and how the government thinks most of America, just because they are not on a certain income or above the poverty line that the set,is in poverty. Another reason my thinking was changed was because this article stated:"Some poor families do experience hunger, meaning a temporary discomfort due to food shortages. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 13 percent of poor families and 2.6 percent of poor children experience hunger at some point during the year." This changed my thinking also because it shows not only do people in poverty become homeless but they also starve at some point in their lives or they always do. Reading this article and discovering definitions for poverty and how people are effected by poverty I found that i am definitely against poverty and I think the government should help a little more instead of putting more people in to poverty by limiting jobs and making a poverty line.

Breaking Dawn

In class we are reading "Romeo and Juliet" and when I am not reading that I'm reading my independent book "Breaking Dawn." When I am reading breaking dawn I can really relate it to the book that we are reading in class romeo and Juliet. The two books have to do with two families that are in a feud with each other and have to learn to get along with each other for the ones they love. In Breaking Dawn the main characters Edward, Jacob, and Bella all are from different worlds and Edward and Jacob fight over Bella and her exsitence in the world. This relates to Romeo and Juliet because Romeo and Juliets family hate each other but Romeo and Juliet fall in love in the end and have to face the facts that their familys hate each other. Also in class we watched different clips about how love can cause voilence. These two books give a major example of how love can cause voilence. I think this because in these two books the two sides fight for the one they love.

Is there anything I can relate to what we are doing in this class?

Anthem

In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand there are many conflicts but i think the most important one is the confict that Equality 7-2521 can not call him self i and always calls himself we or says our. This conflict is important because Equality 7-2521 has no identity or something to call his. He grew up in a world where every one is one and they all think they look the same. This kind of conflict is a man vs. self because Equality 7-2521 is fighting for him self and kind of against him self to show people they are wrong about him and that he is just as smart as every one else even the scholors.

How can i relate this to the world around me?

Topic sentence: After reviewing the shocking story on CNN's web page about two young collage students in Nevada who where nearly killed by a a car with a drunk driver in it, I got to thinking about how much this reflects the world that is around us, and how one can get drunk to show how upset they are and to fix their own problems and then not even feel sorry for the ones they hurt and claim that they thought it was their girlfriends house.

First lead-in: Two young collage students where sleeping in their house when a drunk driver slammed into the side of their house and on to their bed nearly killing them."Two Nevada college students struggled to stay calm after a drunk driver allegedly tore into their home, ripping them from their slumber."
First lead-out:After the couple allegedly got woken up at 4 in the morning by the drunk driver the couple was shocked by the surprise and nearly speechless. The couple was stuck under the car for nearly an hour and the fire department struggled to get the couple out from under the car.

Second lead-in:The drunk driver that crashed into the house of two Nevada state collage students claimed that he crashed into the house because he thought it was his girlfriends house."A motorist allegedly drove into their bedroom around 4 a.m., mistakenly believing it was his ex-girlfriend's home."
Second lead-out: The drunk driver that nearly killed the couple in collage mistaken the house for his girlfriends. He had a plan to kill his girl friend if he didn't already kill her with the car.He claims that the house that the couple lived in is indeed his girlfriends and that she was probably just at her boyfriends house cheating on him. The drunk driver had stolen the car that was crashed into the house and had many deadly weapons to kill his girlfriend.

Third lead-in: The couple that was woken up at 4 in the morning and nearly killed by a car ended up being ok and only having a couple burns and scraps."The two left the scene with relatively minor scrapes and burns."
Third lead out:The couple well under the car of a drunk driver, had a fluid leak on them and they feared that the car might explode on them , killing them. The fire department was able to use a chain saw to cut through the car and make it easier to slide the couple out with out breaking their legs. The couple made it out with only some bruns and a couple of scrapes.

Conclusion: Although this story was very shocking, I thought it reflected the world and the events around us because it has a lot of whats on the daily news like drunk drivers crashing and hurting others. Also it has a lot to say about what our world has become and how it may look in the future.

short story response # 1

To answer the Question "How do words and actions influence who others become?"I choose the short story " The Scarlet Ibis". I choose this story because I think that it strongly explains how ones actions and words can changes ones attitude toward someones thinking like learning to walk. This is exactly what happens in the Scarlet Ibis. A young boy named Doodle was born weak and thin as a twig, and Doodle's older brother was upset about his little brother being weak. So one day Doodle's older brother pushed and told his little brother that he could walk, all he had to do was try. Those simple words were all it took to get Doodle to his feet and practice walking. This goes to show that eight simple words and the fact of a older brother trying so hard to help his little brother can make one walk and change their appearance and confidence of themselves. For the second question "To what extent do actions change intentions?" I choose the short story "The Scarlet Ibis." I choose this story because I think it also explains well to what extent actions can change ones intentions. Doodle's older brother just by telling him and teaching him how to walk, changed Doodles intentions about walking, because at the beginning of the story every one had low intentions on Doodle walking.
